‘Discovery’ grocery store to showcase curated collection of better-made brands
Pop Up Grocer is coming to Washington, DC’s NoMa district at Union Market May 6. The grocery store venture, founded in 2019 as a place for discovery, will land at 1262 5th Street, Northeast. Its month-long operation in NoMa will bring a set of “emerging better-made brands and their founders,” announced the company.
Brands on the rise with a purpose will pop up at the Pop Up Grocer. A collection of 120 brands and more than 400 products in food, beverage, home, body, and pet care will entice customers to the store. These brands will come in creative packaging, too. They are also committed to sustainability, ingredient transparency and innovative flavor.
In actuality, Pop Up Grocer ends up giving valuable exposure to small businesses. Its collection is 54% women-owned and 25% BIPOC-owned and queer-owned.
The founders are looking to spark conversation surrounding brands that walk their own path apart from the average mega grocery store. National brands, like Kin Euphorics, Chewsy, and Haven’s Kitchen are included. Several DC-based brands will also be in the spotlight, including flavored almond butter from District Snacks, Phil’s Finest omnivore sausage and Ayoba grass-fed jerky, among others. Plus, Pop Up Grocer will donate 5% of in-store sales to one emerging brand.
“We’re eager to open our doors to the DC community,” says Emily Schildt, founder and chief executive of Pop Up Grocer. “DC’s diverse and continuously growing culinary scene make it the perfect city for Pop Up Grocer to showcase its ever-evolving selection of sustainable, multicultural and innovative offerings. We hope to show the nation’s capital grocery shopping like they’ve never seen before.”
The design of Pop Up Grocer in DC will feature “bright and playful colors, striped tiled floors, and whimsical accents like disco balls and light-up signs that adorn the walls. The space will also showcase beautiful floral installations in collaboration with DC-based florist, She Loves Me,” according to an announcement.
Chaz Capobianco designed the curated store. Something truly distinctive and differentiated from the average grocery store, Pop Up Grocer DC will stand out in design, color and organization.
