Western Market Foodhall added Falafel Inc. and Arepa Zone. Both vendors recently opened, joining five other restaurants in the Foggy Bottom food destination.
Falafel Inc. specializes in Mediterranean flavors, offering a menu of authentic vegetarian falafel, hummus, tabouli, and za’atar fries. These come in customers’ choice of pita or bowl. In addition, the concept’s partnership with World Food Programme, a humanitarian food organization, provides diners an opportunity to do good. Each purchase of $10 helps feed a refugee in need, says Falafel Inc.
Arepa Zone held its grand opening February 26 at Western Market. The eatery’s origins began in a bright yellow food truck in 2014. The Venezuelan-food concept now boats locations in downtown DC and inside Audi Field. Guests can try arepas, cachapas, tequeños, and other flavorful Venezuelan dishes.
These are the five already-opened restaurants:
- Capo Italian Deli
- Mason’s Lobster
- Roaming Rooster
Bandoola Bowl and Tigerella are upcoming restaurant concepts that will make up Phase II of the opening of Western Market, in addition to
- Alitiko, which comes from the Greek word for punk, is inspired by owner Dimitri Piskapas’ childhood in Greece. The Greek concept featuring a Greco-Middle Eastern menu takes its cues from Greek street foods. Enjoy gyros, sandwiches, and fresh Mediterranean sides. On the opening menu, Piskapas’ restaurant will offer cucumber & zucchini fritters, slow-roasted shawarma, glazed pork neck, and house cut fries.
- Nim Ali features Guatemalan street food. The concept began as a pop-up inside Jake’s Tavern in Shaw, DC earlier this year. The eatery will feature a diverse selection of snacks and full plates including shukos (street hot dogs), antojitos, mixtas, tacos and more. The “owners Rosario Guzman and Karla Alonzo chose the name Nim Ali in reverence to the Guatemalan nickname given to female family leaders, referencial to a strong Mayan queen,” according to a 2021 Western Market announcement.
