Local chain takes gold for classic cheese pizza
At the International Pizza Expo’s competition honoring some of the world’s best pizza makers, local chain Andy’s Pizza took home the 2021 World Pizza Championships prize in the Traditional category for its classic cheese pizza. The New York-style pizza shop relies on pure craftsmanship around its dough, which is cold-fermented for 72 hours and cooked in a New York deck oven, creating a crisp pizza on the outside and soft and chewy in the interior.
The origins of Andy’s Pizza at the Tysons Galleria shopping center in McLean, Va. has led to an enterprise that has grown through hospitality partnerships in the Washington, DC area. Outside Tysons, the chain distributes its pizza in all its options, including the classic cheese pizza, at a standalone carryout in Shaw, Atlas Brew Works’ Half Street Brewery & Tap Room, next to Nationals Park, and, most recently, with Streets Market.
“I believe we won because we care about every ingredient in our pizza,” said Andy’s Pizza Owner Andy Brown. “It didn’t feel right to compete with something we don’t sell or pride ourselves on. We won with the exact same cheese pizza that’s available by the slice at all of our pizzerias. I’m thrilled that the judges saw everything that goes into each slice.”
Brown recommends carryout and dine-in for the best pizza experience. He added, “If you must choose delivery, we’re sealing every box with our reheat sticker for the best at-home experience.”
