Diners are asked to order one delivery, takeout meal March 24 + share on social media
A group of restaurants, led by Panera Bread, Noodles and Company, Veggie Grill, El Torito, Jason’s Deli, The Habit Burger Grill, Lemonade, Modern Market, and Chevys Fresh Mex, are calling for Americans to participate in The Great American Takeout. The event, promoted on social media channels, will be held Tuesday, March 24.
During the Great American Takeout, consumers are asked to participate in at least one delivery or takeout order during March 24. The group cites information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggesting there’s “little evidence that COVID-19 can be transmitted through food or packaging.”
The restaurant industry had employed more than 15M people prior to the coronavirus pandemic. According to a State of the Restaurant Industry report published by the National Restaurant Association, employment in the industry would have reached 15.6M this year.
The restaurant industry nationwide has been hurt by the economic impact of restrictions meant to flatten the curve of COVID-19 spreading. In Washington, D.C., many restaurants have temporarily closed, but others have shifted to an all-takeout and delivery model. These include chains like Rasa, a local Indian fast-casual chain, Gravitas, Supra, and TallBoy.
The coalition of restaurants recommends people post on social media in advance of the event and encourage friends and followers to join the discussion in #thegreatamericantakeout. They can also engage friends, family, and colleagues, and encourage them to support their local restaurants by ordering takeout meals. More importantly, they can order delivery or takeout meals March 24, sharing the experience on social media with #thegreatamericantakeout
