DC Winter Restaurant Week lunch offers great deals around the region

As global taste tour, $22 lunch offers value after holiday season

More of the eateries participating in the Metropolitan Washington Winter Restaurant Week posted their menus online. There’s a variety of American and international cuisine on the horizon and special deals. Organized by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, 2020 Winter Restaurant in Week in D.C. runs from January 13 through January 19. During the week-long celebration, eateries offer brunch and lunch for $22 and dinner for $35, excluding tax and tip.

Since lunch is part of the deal, it’s easy to see that a special trip to enjoy memorable restaurant food isn’t necessarily required. Several acclaimed and popular restaurants might be within easy walking distance from the office and accessible before the evening rush hour. Here are some examples.

Kingbird at Watergate Hotel

Three choices of appetizers are on the Restaurant Week menu at Kingbird. Grilled Bell Peppers offer a medley of pine nuts, fresh parsley, garlic, and pecorino cheese, served with italian chicory salad, and grilled zucchini The Heirloom Squash Soup is topped with hazelnuts and whipped crème fraîche. A Lobster Salad comes with granny smith apple chilled in champagne and fresh grapefruit.

The main course at Kingbird looks to be a winner: There’s a choice of Allen Brothers Petit Filet Mignon with beef jus and “sexy fries.” The Lobster Spaghetti taps saffron pasta, herb and piperade as accompaniments. Finish off the meal with either the Spiced Orange & Thyme Crème Brûlée, with fresh berries and cinnamon, or the Chocolate Tarte, adorned with mint and grand marnier chantilly.

Taberna del Alabardero

At Taberna del Alabardero, the same menu selections for dinner are available for lunch. Enjoy traditional spanish dishes that are a journey into Spain. Some of the appetizer choices include Gambas Al Ajillo (Garlic Shrimp), Ensaladilla de Atun (Potato Salad with tuna, peas and carrots) and Patatas Braviolis, which are fried potatoes with spicy mayonnaise and aioli—a very popular Spanish tapas dish. For the second course, salmon, mahi mahi and a mushroom vegetarian dish are all on the menu. In addition, there’s chicken with garlic cream and a whisky pork tenderloin dish. Among the sweet finishes are Flan de Queso and Tarta de Calabaza (Pumpkin Cake with Cream Cheese).

Supra, a Georgian Restaurant

Supra offers plenty of choice when it comes to appetizers and the main course. And guests can finish off their meal with a scoop of Sorbet in rotating flavors. To start, there’s a Tiflis Salad with greens, gouda, cucumbers, tomato, fresh herbs, and lemon tarragon dressing. Supra prepares the Beets Tkemalit with grilled fennel, salt-roasted beets, toasted hazelnuts, Georgian spiced yogurt, and red themali vinaigrette. These are just two of the five choices.

Entrees total nine selections. Among them are the Chicken Bazhe Sandwich, Arajuli Khachapuli and the Mussels Pomodorit. The Mussels Pomodorit combine P.E.I. mussels, tomato broth with fresh herbs and walnut-mchadi crumble. In the Chicken Bazhe, grilled chicken is topped with walnut sauce, cucumbers, fresh herbs, on a grilled flatbread made with traditional khachapuri dough.The Arajuli Khachapuli is made with the traditional dough-shaped cheese bread and organic egg.

Buena Vida in Silver Spring

At this restaurant on Ramsey Avenue, the menu offers unlimited small plates for $22. There’s a fairly robust selection. Some of the appetizer choices include Beef Barbacoa Nachos, Sweet Corn Empanadas and Chicken Tinga Tostada for example. The restaurant also offers a choice of make-your-own tacos, with proteins like carne asada and carnitas.

For seafood choices, there’s a spicy seafood stew. Buena Vida also offers a staple of quesadillas and traditional plates. Guests can try the Chicken Pipian with pumpkin seed and mole verde, or the Spicy Fried Chicken with pickled vegetables and smoked agave.
