Health-focused chain among retailers, restaurants opening at renovated Ballston Mall
South Block Juice opened its ninth store in Arlington, Va. at Ballston Quarter March 25. The new South Block Ballston unit is a compact design within a main entryway off of Wilson Boulevard into Ballston Quarter. South Block is a health-focused beverage and acai-bowl chain that has its roots in Washington, D.C.. The emerging chain was founded 15 years ago by Amir Mostafavi, also its current CEO. A new Rosslyn unit will open this summer, according to an email from Mostafavi, adding to store locations that include Old Town, Alexandria and Clarendon in Arlington.
Originally this was an idea that came about while Mostafavi was studying at George Washington University, and he opened his first shop in 2004. South Block finds that creating a community is an important part of the experience, and “put no limits on people that are seeking out positive energy and fresh and tasty food,” to make South Block as inclusive to all demographics and age groups as possible.
And the company doesn’t take any shortcuts when it comes to making their products, whether it’s cold pressed juice or an acai bowl. Each item uses fresh ingredients and is made with the consumer’s needs in mind.
South Block in good company as retail, restaurants, commercial & residential leasing explode in Ballston
Ballston Quarter, the revamped version of the former Boston Commons mall, has been steadily adding new restaurants in preparation for the busy summer and fall shopping seasons. Hot Lola’s opened in March and gained a lot of attention because it committed to pay employees at least $13 per hour (Virginia’s minimum wage is nearly half that). True Food Kitchen is preparing for a spring opening.
And Copa Spanish Bar and Mi & Yu Noodle shop have opened at Ballston Quarter. As one of Arlington’s hottest and youngest neighborhoods, Ballston rises up high amid a flurry of activity over the next couple of years, with several new, high-profile retail, restaurant and commercial & residential developments arriving.
Headlining the newcomers is the mixed-use 4040 Wilson Boulevard project, part of the Liberty Center development. It will be home to a second unit of The Salt Line restaurants. The first restaurant is located at Navy Yard, just steps away from Nats Park. 4040 Wilson, at XX stories, is the tallest building in Ballston and boasts “unobstructed view of Washington, D.C.” in its online profile.
A new mixed-use development, the Waycroft, by developer Saul Centers, is also coming to the west side of the neighborhood at Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard. Also, a new Silver Diner restaurant and Target store will be the retail anchors of the building, and 450 luxury apartment residences will rise up at the trophy corner of the neighborhood.
South Block Ballston is in good company in the Ballston Business District, with neighboring fitness centers, yoga and cycling studios nearby. Ballston Crossfit, Core Allegro, OrangeTheory, and Onelife Fitness are within walking distance. What’s more, Arlington was named the “Fittest City” in America, based on an index developed by the American Collage of Sports Medicine.
Additionally, Arlington County also has some of the most appealing demographics to restaurants and retailers, with more than 40 percent of the population between the ages of 25 and 44. Arlington residents, according to Arlington County statistics, boast a median per capita annual income of $89,300.
